Dear Equal Parenting Supporters and Child Advocates,

Two critical bills are now pending at the NH Senate after having passed the NH House of Representatives and may be voted on at any time.   The votes on these bill could occur literally any day now.

HB529, relative to parental rights and responsibilities, would ensure that both mother and father are treated as comparable parents from the outset in child custody proceedings.   In the absence of an agreement between the parties, this bill would require the courts to make detailed findings on the record of the evidence used as a basis if the court was to order that comparable parenting rights and responsibilities should not be granted to both parents.

HB1580, relative to the child support formula, would modify the NH child support guideline so as to apportion child support fairly as a measure of both parents' income and the amount of parenting time during which each parent is responsible for the care of their children.  This bill would stop the current practice whereby one parent's household (the obligor's) is impoverished while an excessive amount of child support is ordered to be sent to the other parent's (the obligee's) household.  This bill would provide an appropriate amount of support in all shared parenting arrangements for both parents' households so that both parents can adequately care for their children.

HB529 and HB1580 are both at this moment at a critical stage as they are considered by two separate committees at the NH Senate.   Both have now had their public hearings and could be voted on by committee any day.

If you have yet to contact the Senate members of the committees below then please recognize if you don't provide your support for these bills promptly you may not get another chance to do so.   Even if you have already contacted the committee members you may want to consider contacting them again using another method.   If you have sent email already then please consider making some phone calls.  If you have telephoned already then consider sending email.

Telephone calls are the most effective means of expressing your support for these bills.   Email is a useful tool as well, though not as effective as phone calls.

Please also consider contacting other Senate members besides those on the two committees below, as these bills will go to the entire Senate for a vote after they are voted on by committee.

RIGHT NOW is the time to express your support for reform of the extremely dysfunctional NH family law system.  These two bills ask for nothing more than fair and equitable treatment for both mother AND father, in addition to the children who deserve TWO meaningful parents when those parents are fit and desirous of remaining an integral part of their children's lives.

Once the votes on HB529 and HB1580 have passed the opportunity to effect meaningful reform may not come again for many years.    PLEASE ACT NOW...

Contact information for the Senate members is below.   NHCUSTODY.ORG apologizes if you have received this message more than once.   If so, then please respond to info@nhcustody.org and provide the address where more than one ACTION ALERT was sent so that we may correct our distribution list.

Regards to you and your family,
Marc
